In order to be recognized as a Maryland Heritage Area, the potential area must demonstrate that its municipal governments and citizens can provide--and are willing to provide--adequate
stewardship of the regionās cultural, historic, and natural resources.
The MHAA guidelines ask for a description of the key policies shaping land use; the preservation initiatives for historic resources; and the conservation mechanisms for natural resources,
open space, and farmland. At the state and local levels, there are a variety of programs and ordinances designed to help protect, preserve, and enhance local resources. At the local level, many efforts have been made to identify important resources, codify county policies for their protection, and organize private efforts to contribute to resource protection and public education.
