According to the MHAA Selection Criteria and the ãTen Core Components of a Successful Heritage Areaä listed in Appendix B, the region must possess the potential to bring a return on investment and achieve the vision developed for the heritage area.  The heritage area meets the criteria in the following ways: 

The area possesses sufficient, physical evidence of its heritage, and its historic, natural, and cultural resources are significant to the development of Maryland. 

  • The economy of the region is stable and growing, with much potential for expansion in the tourism industry. 
     
  • Interpretation programs underway in the region address most of the themes identified in this report.  Currently, a wide variety of organizations engage in interpretation efforts, which can be expanded.
     
  • Possible linkage networks are many and varied.  Means exist to allow anyone to explore the region by foot, bicycle, automobile, boat, airplane, and other means.
     
  • Local residents are committed to the success of the potential heritage area.  Business leaders, representatives from county and municipal government offices, civic groups, and other interested organizations have expressed their interest in this project or have donated resources, or both.
     
  • Public policy, local organizations, and residents have demonstrated stewardship of their natural, cultural, and historic resources.
     
  • Residents and committed organizations have crafted a vision of how the Upper Eastern Shore will benefit from heritage development in the region.
