The Maryland Heritage Areas Program

Maryland Certified Heritage Areas

Why Certification?

Certified Heritage Areas (CHAs) are very special geographic areas in Maryland which contain exceptionally high concentrations of unique historical, cultural, and natural resources, and where motivated community partners are dedicated to the protection and development of those resources for economic development through heritage tourism.

Projects and properties throughout the CHA are eligible for grants from the Maryland Heritage Areas Authority Financing Fund for planning, design, interpretation (including exhibits, materials, or other appropriate products to further educational and recreational objectives), marketing, and programming, and to encourage revitalization and reinvestment in the CHA.  CHAs are also eligible for broad program support from state government.

What is a Certified Heritage Area?

The CHA must contain a significantly high concentration of historical, cultural, and natural resources which are attracting or have considerable potential in attracting tourists.  The CHA must be linked to a clearly defined Management Plan.

The CHA must be able to benefit from the incentives available through the Heritage Areas Program through increased tourism within the CHA that produces measurable preservation and economic development in the area.

Target Investment Zones (TIZs) within a Certified Heritage Zone are priority zones which will attract significant private investment.  Investment is encouraged through special incentives available through the Maryland Heritage Preservation and Tourism Areas Program. TIZs have high potential for demonstrable results and return on public investment within a relatively short period of time.
